Fuse Beads Grid Size Guide
Practical guide to match grid size to projects from keychains to portraits and large art.
Picking a grid size is like picking a canvas. Go too small and your subject gets squished. Go too big and you will be sorting beads for days. Here is the quick guide I use when deciding how large to build.
Rule of thumb table
| Grid size | Best for | Why it works |
|---|---|---|
| Small | icons, keychains, simple badges | fewer beads, fast builds, shapes stay readable |
| Medium | portraits, pets, characters | enough room for eyes and shading without massive cost |
| Large | murals, landscapes, detailed art | more pixels means more detail, but a lot more beads |
Small grids keep it cute
Small grids are great for icons and keychains. You can finish them in a sitting, and the design stays bold. Use a limited palette and big shapes so the icon still reads when it shrinks.
Medium grids hit the sweet spot
If you want a recognizable face or a character, medium is the safe choice. You get room for eyes, hair, and a hint of shading, but the piece is still portable. This is where most Perler beads portraits feel right.
Large grids are a commitment
Large grids unlock detail, but they also eat beads and time. Plan your palette, buy extra of the main colors, and be ready to build in sections. The payoff is worth it, just budget for it.
Pick a grid size based on the final use, not the source image. A perfect photo does not matter if the grid is too small to show it.
